Joy Begins When God Sees You-Sunday, 12/14/2025

Scripture: Luke 1:26–33

The angel said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
… “You have found favor with God.”

Mary doesn’t begin the story singing—she begins confused and afraid. The angel’s greeting unsettles her, not because she doubts God exists, but because she doubts God would turn His face toward someone like her. Young. Poor. Unimportant by the world’s standards.

But that is exactly where joy begins: God sees Mary before Mary ever sees herself as part of God’s story. God names her “favored,” not because she has achieved something, but because God delights in beginning with the overlooked.

Many of us feel unseen in our own way—lost in our schedules, hidden behind responsibilities, or simply feeling unimportant. Advent tells us: Joy starts with God’s gaze, not with our greatness. Like Mary, you are seen, known, and chosen for God’s work in the world.

Mary’s first step was not understanding the whole plan—it was receiving the truth that God was with her. Joy starts with presence, not perfection.

Reflection Question: Where do you most need to remember that God sees and favors you today?

Action Step: Stand in front of a mirror for ten seconds and speak aloud:
“God sees me. God is with me. I am favored in God’s eyes.”

Prayer: Holy God, open my heart to receive Your gaze of love. Help me trust that You see me, know me, and call me favored. Let joy begin here—with You. Amen.
